Like the years, jewellery trends reliably come and go, but you know what we think? They both just keep getting better!
People may have had a negative outlook about 2016 – and yes, maybe towards the end there it was looking a little bleak – but if we reminisce on the good parts, it wasn't so bad after all! For us, those good parts are all the new fashion jewellery trends! Let's take a quick moment to review what trends we just couldn't get enough of from last year before we get into the goodness that is 2017!
2016 jewellery recap
Our two favourite trends from last year are none other than personalised pieces and chokers. Personalised accessories cropped up in various forms. We saw those sweet petite pieces that fell so delicately wherever they were placed. The thin chains, wires and beads made onlookers double take at very elegant little detail. Other looks were personalised for the individual wearer with significant engravings etched into the precious metals. That said, we don't expect such sentimental jewellery to ever go out of style.
Chokers provided a fun throwback accessory to the '90s, though we glammed it up for a look that was still edgy, but highly fashionable as well. Out went the stretchy plastic bands, and in came the collars made of metals, velvet, leather, lace – you name it!
Layered together, these looks ruled 2016.
Individually, they were awesome trends on their own, but the combination brought them to a whole new level providing the wearer with amazingly chic street style. Layered together, these looks ruled 2016. While these trends might have some longevity into the new year, there is still plenty to be excited for in 2017. Let's check out some of the styles we're looking forward to most.
2017 jewellery trends
Statement pendants: Pendants that pop were draped around the necks of fashion models on some of the world's biggest runways. These elegant pieces add a flashy bit of movement to any outfit, for sure. In particular, we are fascinated with long strings of pearls. The gems from the sea never really go out of fashion, but we're excited to see them back at the forefront of the statement pendant trend.
Mineral details: 2017 is all about getting grounded and as such, we're seeing jewellery that features minerals and raw stones. These designs are taking form in all different shapes and sizes, so you can play with this trend however you want. It might sound a little funky, but if you want to get in on this trend, opt for gemstones with earthy tones such as emerald or even a smoky quartz.
Overall, runways were detailed with unique materials including wood, rope and plastic. Certainly, accessorising is going to be interesting this year – a real expression of the wearer!
Hoop earrings: Hoops are back! This trend has a bit of nostalgia to it just like the chokers, doesn't it? And why did we ever let them go? They're awesome for almost every occasion, taking a bland outfit to a cool one. Earrings in general are getting redone this year, and as such you can expect to see some relatively unique designs.
It seems as though 2017 will have a large focus on the ears, so get creative with your collection.
