Who can remember the first time you got your ears pierced? The nerves leading up to the moment the needle punctures the earlobe, followed by the sigh of relief afterwards – see, that wasn't so bad!
Joining the 'ears pierced club' was a big deal for any young girl – now there are so many opportunities to accessorise! Because let's face it, who doesn't love looking at the rows and rows of new earrings awaiting to be added to your collection? However, you probably also remember that before you got up from the ear piercing chair, you were told to keep your starter earring in for some odd days, and needed to clean the hole routinely.
This is because your ears are still getting used to the new bling and are relatively vulnerable to infection. Even after this period, however, you should only want to put the best of the best jewellery in your ears. And so, without further ado here is our guide to the best earrings for newly pierced ears.
Don't go cheap
Okay, so first things first – never shop for cheap earrings. Even when you've had your ears pierced for years, you still want to avoid inexpensive earrings as these aren't made with quality metals and can irritate your ears. Not to mention that they just don't last that long either.
When you buy quality metals and gems, you'll have those earrings for a long time, if not a lifetime (assuming you don't lose them). How can you determine the good from the bad? Well, keep reading!
How to shop for quality earrings
Of course, the price is usually the first indicator – but even those metals might irritate you if they are made of a mixture with a couple different elements in them. Earrings that contain copper or nickel are big ones to avoid as they can cause serious allergic reactions. If your ears get infected from this, you'll have to take them out and the hole will likely close – you'll have to go through the piercing process all over again.
Sterling silver or high carat gold are going to be your best bet. If you have particularly sensitive skin, be wary of white gold, however, as this contains nickel! Other safe options include platinum and titanium.
Don't forget, your ears are still a little sensitive, so you don't want to wear an earring that's too heavy as this could stretch your lobe and new hole. And no one wants a stretched out hole!
